Upper Elementary
The Upper Elementary program

The Montessori Elementary classroom fosters the development of well-rounded citizens of our community, nation, and the universe. In addition to having solid academic skills, our students learn to be responsible, respectful, and resourceful. In short, they develop as humanitarians.

Characteristics of the Upper Elementary classroom include:

•
Academic work is self-paced

•
Independence is fostered by self-checking work

•
Standardized testing monitors academic progress

•
Peer teaching enhances self-esteem

•
Students work together, developing collaborative skills

The students continue advanced work in mathematics (reasoning and skill) and language arts (literature and composition) at their own pace. Because the student at this level has a predisposed desire to learn about culture, our three-year curriculum covers the timeline of human development over the centuries, highlighting major contributions and events across all disciplines. Students learn about prehistoric cultures, ancient civilizations, the medieval period, the Renaissance, the Victorian era, and modern history and culture.

Study is not confined to textbooks. Students learn to make connections between disciplines (incorporating art, drama, and music) and become resourceful in gathering and presenting information to their peers.
